Understanding homelessness
Homelessness is a world wide phenomenon.
In South Africa every city/town has it’s challenge with Homelessness.
Persons living on the streets are people with names and needs and lost opportunities. They need recognition, guidance, support in basic needs and help to get diverted away from street life.
The reason for being homeless are plenty: poverty, lack of skills and work opportunities, crime, mental health issues, drugs, family dis-integration and many more. The reasons are not that important, but relevant and helps to determine a pathway away from the street.
Helping to serve the homeless brings dignity to them, develop hope and reduces needs for crime and drug abuse.
Homelessness is a challenge to society and collectively we must be the good Samaritan to reduce and prevent homelessness.

Housing first
Any person needs a roof over his/her head. We consider that a basic human right.
The housing first principle means that people are offered accommodation first – as a principle – and then they can work on improving their life.
When people have safe and secure accommodation, stability can return to their existence and the focus can shift to their other needs.
Work can then start on rebuilding their lives.

Social re-integration
People living on the street disengage with main line society.
Their engagement becomes negative and/or destructive due to begging and their unfavourable look and habits. Their need for money for drugs in many cases also breaks down acceptability in society’s eyes.
The road to social re-integration is a long road. The goal can be re-integration with their family or their community of origin or independent re-integration if they are financially independent. However re-integration with their families is not a given due to poverty, social barriers and economic barriers.
Social re-integration is our primary objective and the 6 month program that Ithemba Centre offers focusses to ensure some form of social re-integration away from street life after 6 months.
