Creating Hope 1 mile at a time

Starting in Banff, Alberta, Canada and finishing in Antelope Wells, New Mexico, The Tour Divide covers 4345km of unpaved mountainous terrain with roughly 200,000ft of total elevation, providing riders with some of the most beautiful scenery North America has to offer. With no designated rest stops and a constant running clock, riders are left to their own devices. Those looking to achieve the fastest times look at around 3/4 hours of sleep per night.

The roots of the Tour Divide lie in the creation of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR) in 1997, a route developed by the Adventure Cycling Association. Spanning the length of the Rocky Mountains along the Continental Divide, the GDMBR was designed as the world’s longest off-pavement bike route. The route passes through remote, rugged terrain, crossing the U.S. states of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico, with a portion in southern Canada.

The first Tour Divide race in 2008 saw Matthew Lee take the win, completing the race in 19 days and 12 hours.

Introduction

Four very able cyclists from South Africa will participate during June/July 2025 in one of the most challenging  mountain bike races in the USA/Canada. They will participate in the Great Divide route – in the mountains of north America on mountain bikes on the great divide between the Pacific ocean and the Atlantic ocean. The route runs mainly through the Rocky mountains on mainly mountain- and district roads.

The four riders from South Africa are:
  • Fanie Venter from Stellenbosch
  • James Ross-Marsh from Stellenbosch
  • Philip Malan from Pretoria
  • Thinus Reedelinghuis from Pretoria
Tour Divide:

The route is used during most parts of the year by many groups and individuals. Every year there are however a “Grand Depart”, annually on the second Friday of June. The grand depart goes southwards  from Banff in Canada which starts the Tour Divide. This year the starting date is:
